In general, no method exists to completely remove a scar once it has formed since it represents the organisms try to replace normal skin after trauma with a tissue of a lesser quality.
Currently, there is no alternative available for joining skin edges without creating a scar.
It is, however, possible to improve the cosmetic appearance of a scar.
There are various methods for improving the look of a scar. It can be done surgically, with excision of the old scar and creation of a new, less visible, cosmetically more appealing scar. In other cases, very prominent scars that are raised above the skin level ,can be flattened via laser. This works especially well in the face as skin appendages, such as hair, sweat glands and sebbaceous glands are able to quickly regenerate the top layer of the skin.
Also, freshly formed, bright red scars may be treated with the vascular lasers such as the pulsed dye laser to speed up the lightening of the scar.
Additionally a broad range of conservative approaches to improve scars exists: These include topical therapy with special ointments such as Contractubex©, application of silicone dressings (Mepiform©, Silastic© and others) or silicone ointments (Dermatix© and others).
Each individual case requires careful examination to choose the appropriate and most useful treatment modality.
Also, smoking should be stopped completely as it aggravates scarring.
